Dixie Summer Camps

The 2019 Dixie Summer Camps were AMAZING!!!

Camp Scholarships are available for students in PreK thru 12th Grade. These are provided in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Solomon Lee DeVille Memorial Art Scholarship. 

The Solomon Lee DeVille Memorial Art Scholarship provides opportunities for kids to learn and create works of art. Through generous donations by friends and family honoring the memory of Solomon, the scholarship will pay for class fees, materials, and any associated costs for those needing financial assistance. School-age youth from Carroll County interested in taking art, pottery, photography, woodworking, and creative hand-lettering classes may apply.

  • Entrance for these camps will all be at the lower level of The Dixie except Mudslingers Pottery Camp and Woodworking Camp will be at Mudslingers Pottery Studio.

Participant Rules

  1. Participants are expected to arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before class is scheduled to begin. The teacher needs time in between classes to clean and prepare for the next class.
  2. Parents/guardians must be prompt in the pickup of students.
  3. No food, gum, or drink is allowed at The Dixie or in the Mudslingers studio.
  4. Please notify the instructor if you will be missing a class. Projects that take place during your absence cannot be made up.
  5. The Dixie reserves the right to dismiss and not enroll participants for the following reasons: financial account not current, disruptive behavior, disrespect to the instructor, disregard to instructions, and possession of tobacco, alcohol, drugs or weapons.

The doodling class will involve teaching students how to use simple drawing elements in a repetitive nature to form a beautiful and impressive piece of art. Sometimes all it takes is just allowing the brain to draw what it wants and then reaping the benefits of watching a doodle slowly become a masterpiece! And the cool part is---your drawing is basically everything swimming around in your brain---but now it’s on paper! Limit of 20 students per class.

Camp Location: The Dixie - Academic Enrichment Center

This class explores looking at the alphabet in a colorful and creative way! Students will learn how to add personality to letterforms to create one-of-a-kind works of art. No prior hand-lettering classes needed, this is a class for anyone who enjoys thinking outside of the box. The class comes with in-class materials, a take-home workbook, and an 8x10 of their hand-lettered name or word of their choosing. Limit of 12 students per class.

Camp Location: The Dixie - Academic Enrichment Center
 

Students will receive an introduction to their chosen instrument(s) and to understand rhythm. They will learn to play several tunes and to participate in an ensemble with the other students in their grade level. No prior instrument experience necessary. Birdsong School of Music will provide the harps, keyboards, and guitars. There is a materials fee of $15 for all Ukulele classes payable to Birdsong School of Music on the first day of class. Violins are not provided and may be rented, purchased, or student may bring their own, providing they are checked two weeks prior to class. Please note that guitars and ukuleles will be provided on first come first serve basis and the instructor will make every effort to provide instruments needed when possible. The Chords class will teach about where chords come from and how to use them on keyboard and string instruments.

This is a 1 Week Camp
Monday - Friday, June 24th - 28th, 2019,  3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
3rd - 8th Grades

When it comes to taking an excellent photograph, did you know that the camera is far less important than the one holding it? It's true. Over these five days, you will experience how to SEE more creatively. You will use your imagination to go beyond selfies and capture truly fascinating photographs. The digital photography summer camp is a guaranteed great time, and it might just change the way you see the world around you.
Special note **Digital Cameras will be provided for this camp!

Amazing photographs happen when your heart, mind, and eye work together. Yes, the camera does play a role, but the primary ingredients are your own creativity and imagination. During these three sessions, you will be challenged to see your subjects in new ways and to make images from a fresh, new perspective. Current trends and the exciting challenges found in photography will be a part of each session. You will not just be sitting on the sidelines listening to presentations. You will be involved in projects that will help you see beyond the surface of the world around you. This camp is for photographers of any skill level. Whether you've just begun or have been using your digital camera for years, the camp will move you forward in your pursuit of finer photographs.
Students are responsible for having own digital photo-taking device. (point-and-shoot, DSLR or cell phone camera)

Camp Location: Mudslingers Pottery Studio

Classes will consist of an introduction to basic pottery skills of pinching, coil-building, slab construction, and throwing on the potter’s wheel. The student will also be introduced to various glazing and firing processes. Limit of 10 students per class.

Camp Location: Mudslingers Pottery Studio

A hands-on camp where students will develop practical woodworking skills by building a variety of fun and useful projects under the direction of a professional carpenter. With an emphasis on hand tool safety, lessons will include measuring, sawing, drilling, sanding, shaping and assembly. Along with practical skills, students will also utilize abstract reasoning, applied mathematics, problem-solving, craftsmanship, fine motor skills, respect for tools and patience. At the completion of the camp, students will be empowered by their skills learned and finished projects for years to come! Limit of 10 students per class.
