Hot
Club of San Francisco
May 31, 2008
Saturday evening at 7:30
The Hot Club of San Francisco presents Silent Surrealism, an
evening of silent surrealist films with live gypsy jazz. The
program includes several short silent films accompanied by
the distinctive music made famous by Stephane Grappelli,
Django Reinhardt, and the Hot Club de France. Silent
Surrealism is a brilliant multi-media trip back to a time
when the artistic and literary style emerged as a means of
expressing the imagination…when writers and filmmakers were
more interested in the implications of words and images and
providing the audience with the opportunity to vicariously
experience the unknown or unimaginable.

Willy Wonka and the
Chocolate Factory
Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson
Warner Bros.; Directed by Mel Stuart
Rated G; 98 minutes; 1971
June 5, 2008
Thursday evening at 7:00
Pure of heart Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) along with
four grossly gluttonous girls and boys win the opportunity
to tour eccentric recluse Willy Wonka’s (Gene Wilder)
magical candy factory and the chance to win a lifetime
supply of chocolate in this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s
classic. One-by-one, the children are undone by their own
greed as the group sails down chocolate rivers, floats
through the Fuzzy Lifting Drinks room, and becomes part of
Wonkavision until only Charlie is left to claim a prize even
more grand than a lifetime of chocolate. |

Just in time for Father’s Day!
June 13, 2008
Friday evening at 7:30
What happened to the comedians who were smart? Who were
clean? Whose material wouldn’t embarrass you if you were on
a date? Well, they got married and had kids and now they
have to get out of the house! Comedians Dan St. Paul, Milt
Abel, Tim Bedore, and Kelly McDonald will have you laughing
hysterically over their observations of fatherhood and
family life.
Comedy by parents for parents! Join Dan St. Paul (Disney’s “Flubber”),
Milt Abel (San Francisco Comedy Competition finalist), Tim
Bedore (NPR’s Marketplace and The Bob & tom Show), and Kelly
McDonald (Tonight show veteran) while they examine the grist
of fatherhood and suburban life: from child birth to the
free food samples at warehouse superstores – no stone is
left unturned. If ever there was a night to get a sitter…

VERTIGO
James Stewart, Kim Novak
Universal Pictures; Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Rated PG; 126 minutes; 1958
July 17, 2008
Thursday evening at 7:00
To say that VERTIGO finds Hitchcock at his most
obsessive, his most perverse, and his sexual best, doesn’t
even begin to convey how haunting this film is, or how
bizarre. Nor does it convey Hitchcock’s passionate style and
the way he defies logic working in a much riskier manner
than usual. A retired police detective (James Stewart) must
overcome vertigo and his obsession for a friend’s wife (Kim
Novak) in this eerie tale of passion. |

Godspell
Book by: John Michael Tebelak
Lyrics & Music by: Stephen Schwartz
Presented by
The Dixie Players (Adult Theatre Troupe)
July 24, 2008 - Thursday evening at
7:30
July 25, 2008 - Friday evening at 7:30
July 26, 2008 - Saturday evening at 7:30
*Recommended for ages 13 and up*
Godspell is based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew,
and this modern and contemporary retelling is a joyous
celebration of music, mime, comedy, and slapstick. The score
of Godspell calls on all modern musical influences,
including Rock, Gospel, and Ragtime - and includes the hits
"Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord" and "Day by Day."
The story of Godspell speaks to the passion of Jesus Christ,
to teach love and joy in the hearts of the people, rather
than hate and sadness. It speaks of loving your neighbor,
forgiveness, tolerance, and celebration. |
